Am Dienstag war es endlich soweit: Um 11 Uhr fuhr
ich vollgepackt von Auckengill los... tanken in Wick und einen Cappuccino im
Capilla (http://www.capillatapas.co.uk) in Scabster und schon ging es
auf die Northlink (https://www.northlinkferries.co.uk) Fähre von Scrabster nach
Stromness auf den Orkney Inseln...
On Tuesday the moment finally arrived: At 11 am I set off fully loaded from Auckengill... I fuelled up in Wick and had a cappuccino at Capilla (http://www.capillatapas.co.uk) in Scabster, and then it was off onto the Northlink (https://www.northlinkferries.co.uk) ferry from Scrabster to Stromness on the Orkney Islands...

Nach 1 1/2 Stunden Überfahrt erreicht wir schon
kurz vor 14 Uhr Stromness und ich hatte den ganzen Nachmittag Zeit den Westen
der Inseln zu erkunden: Skara Brae (https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/skara-brae) und Broch of Gurness (https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/broch-of-gurness) gebettet in einer
atemberaubender Landschaft bei ebensolchem Wetter! : )
After a 1 1/2 hour crossing, we arrived in Stromness shortly before 2 pm, and I had the whole afternoon to explore the west of the islands: Sara Brae (https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/skara-brae) and the Broch of Gurness (https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/broch-of-gurness), nestled in breathtaking scenery with equally stunning weather! : )

Um 17 Uhr erreiche ich das Aviedale Studio (https://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/aviedale-bb-suite.de.html) in Grosness, nur gerade eine
Viertelstunde von der Hauptstadt Kirkwall entfernt, wo alles zu finden ist. Das
Studio ist klein aber praktisch eingerichtet. Die Lage ist ideal zum
Auskundschaften der Inseln sowie zum Joggen.
At 5 pm I arrived at the Aviedale Studio (https://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/aviedale-bb-suite.de.html) in Grosness, just a quarter of an hour from the capital Kirkwall, where everything is to find. The studio is small but practically furnished. The location is ideal for exploring the islands and for jogging.

Das Wetter war viel besser als vorhergesagt, aber
der Wind machte mich fast wahnsinnig - Böen bis zu 60 km/h!!! - Ich suchte
Sonne und Windschatten und hüllte mich gut ein...
The weather was much better than forecasted, but the wind almost drove me crazy -gusts up to 60 km/h!!! I looked constantly for sun and shelter from the wind and cocooned well...

Die Orkney Inseln sind wunderschön und wirken
mystisch mit ihren Ausgrabungen aus der Jungstein- und Bronzezeit... Mit DNA-Analysen
fand man heraus, dass die neolithischen Bauern ursprünglich aus Anatolien
(Türkei) einwanderten. Auf den Orkney Inseln fand man jedoch folgende
genetische Besonderheit: Die einheimischen Steinzeitmänner hatten überlebt und
zeugten mit den neuen Einwanderfrauen der Glockenbecherkultur (um 2500 v.Chr.)
Kinder – die alte DNA blieb hier dominant, während im restlichen
Grossbritannien die Einwanderer die Urbevölkerung fast komplett ersetzten! - Ich
freue mich auf der Rückreise von den Shetland Inseln nochmals 2 ganze Tage hier
verbringen zu können!
The Orkney Islands are just beautiful and give a
mystical feel with their Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological sites... DNA
analysis have revealed, that the Neolithic farmers originally migrated from
Anatolia (Turkey). However, the following genetic peculiarity was discovered on
the Orkney Islands: The native Stone Age men had survived and fathered children
with the new immigrant women of the Bell Beaker culture (around 2500 BC) - the
old DNA remained dominant here, while in the rest of Great Britain the immigrants
almost completely replaced the indigenous population! – I'm looking forward to
spending another 2 full days here on my return journey from the Shetland

Am Freitag kurz vor Mitternacht würde ich weiter auf die Shetland Inseln reisen… so nahm ich den kühlen und regnerischen Tag gemütlich - glücklicherweise war die Aviedale Suite frei und ich konnte 1 Nacht dazu buchen! Bis ich um 22 Uhr zum Hafen in Kirkwall losfuhr, packte und organisierte ich in Ruhe und machte eine kleine Entdeckungsrunde…

before midnight Friday night, I was continuing my journey to the Shetland
Islands… so I took it easy on the cool and rainy day - luckily, the Aviedale
Suite was available and I was able to book an extra night! Before leaving for
the port in Kirkwall at 10 pm, I packed and organized at my leisure and took a
short drive around…
